About
Karen Stevenson joined Priory as a sessional therapist in April 2022 and offers either face-to-face sessions at Priory Hospital Roehampton or online sessions, if preferred.
She is governed by the professional standards, ethical frameworks and guidelines of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC No. AS017530) and is a member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT).
Karen can provide both in-depth long term therapy and shorter term solution-focused interventions. She has experience of working with a broad client base – from people struggling with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or addiction to adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and in the past, has developed and delivered art workshops to clients at a substance misuse service.
Alongside her work for Priory, she runs her own private practice, offering counselling, psychotherapy and art psychotherapy to adults aged 18 and over.
Training
Karen graduated from the Institute for the Arts in Therapy and Education in July 2021 with a Master of Arts postgraduate degree in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy for Adults. During this, she completed a counselling placement at a community counselling service and two placements within the NHS – a substance misuse service in London and an evening service for female survivors of childhood sexual abuse. She set up her own private practice in her final year.
Her work as a psychotherapist also draws on skills gained from the many creative pursuits she has been involved with over the years. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in painting. She is a qualified teacher of secondary age children, with a PGCE in drama, and has worked with teenagers with emotional and behavioural difficulties. She has also been a co-director and actor with a small-scale theatre company.
