Centrally located in the heart of London’s medical district, and close to Oxford Street and Regent Street, Priory Wellbeing Centre Harley Street offers accessible and tailored mental health support for private outpatients.
We are pleased to be able to offer a novel treatment method for depression, known as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). This innovative technique is available at Priory Wellbeing Centre Harley Street, which is one of the few places in the country where rTMS can be accessed.
An evidence-based depression treatment method, rTMS uses rapidly changing magnetic fields to stimulate areas of the brain that are involved in mood regulation. This increases electrical activity in the brain and causes brain cells to connect more effectively with each other, which has been found to reduce depression and improve mood.
The treatment is safe, effective and non-invasive, resulting in very few side effects. The most common side effects are local skin warming and a brief, mild headache. This technique is typically used when treatment with antidepressant medication and/or depression therapy hasn’t been successful, or when the patient isn’t able to tolerate medication. However, rTMS can also be used as an entry point to depression treatment, if this is preferred.
At Priory Wellbeing Centre Harley Street, we constantly strive to deliver innovative treatment programmes and pathways, which demonstrate tangible results and produce the best possible outcomes for everyone we support. Our tried and tested treatment approaches are underpinned by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, and based on the latest thinking in mental health and depression treatment.

During an rTMS session, an electromagnetic coil will be placed just above your temple. Once this is in place, the electromagnet delivers electrical currents that stimulate the area of your brain that are involved in mood control and depression. This can help to reduce your depression symptoms and improve mood.
Each rTMS session will last for about 40 minutes, and during this time, you’ll sit in a comfortable chair with the electromagnetic coil placed on your head, and will hear clicking noises and feel tapping on your head. You are free to relax, read, or watch TV during your session, and can resume normal daily activities (including driving), immediately after your treatment session. rTMS sessions are usually administered 4 to 5 days per week over a 4-week period.
