Sian’s journey of stability and growth at Priory Beverley House
When I arrived at Beverley House, I was incredibly unstable, and my start here was far from perfect. I was scared, alone, homesick and very unwell. Now, I can honestly say that I would not be who I am today, if I hadn’t walked through the front door.
Through every incident, every fear and every tear, I’ve been supported in so many ways by a patient, non-judgemental and holistic care team. Today, I am stable and working towards my future again, after a long time not seeing a future at all. I am now dispensing my own medication, I have responsibility as a graphic designer here, thanks to the real work opportunities (RWO) programme, and I am working hard to reduce my observations further, so I can begin to get out and about again.
I began attending the psychology groups. At first, I was sceptical. Having done similar groups over several years in the community, I only attended in order to tick one of the many boxes I believed were required for me to get home. However, I now know that consistent attendance at these groups does help, if you put the effort in and use coping mechanisms when faced with challenges.
For me, I’ve noticed my self-esteem, self-compassion and emotional regulation have all really improved. Looking back over worksheets and posters has helped me through times of anxiety by using grounding, breathing techniques and radical acceptance – all techniques I learned in groups.
There is so much I could say about Beverley House, but I’ll finish by saying that every part of the team here is truly fantastic. The support is endless and always available in one form or another.
