SJ's story
Read SJ's story - a remarkable journey with us as Anchor House.
SJ’s story is one of profound transformation and hope, showing that with the right care and support, even the most challenging circumstances can be navigated successfully. Through the collaborative efforts of her family, social worker, health professionals, and the compassionate team at Anchor House, SJ has found a place where she can thrive.
SJ is a remarkable individual who has shown great resilience and adaptation in their life. Diagnosed with a learning disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and registered as blind, SJ’s journey has been anything but easy. Yet, through the power of compassionate care and support from Priory, and her own hard work, she has found a way to thrive.
At the age of five, SJ was taken into care, and at the age of 15 she joined the Victoria Education Centre Children’s Home. This became her home until its closure, leading her to a new chapter at Priory Anchor House.
Upon receiving the referral, the dedicated team at Anchor House immediately created a personalised care plan for SJ. Her social worker also visited, ensuring every detail was covered. SJ’s mother visited her new home after that, ensuring SJ felt safe during the transition.
When SJ first arrived at Anchor House, she was generally settled but showed discomfort during personal care. She would flinch when certain areas were touched, signalling a need for sensitive and careful handling. Despite these initial challenges, the staff were determined to make SJ feel comfortable and secure.
SJ required extensive support in her daily life, particularly with her health needs. Recognising this, Anchor House arranged for staff to undergo specialist training and ensured that all necessary equipment was in place. They also collaborated closely with a variety of health professionals, including her GP and epilepsy nurse, to address SJ’s specific medical requirements.
Anchor House made sure SJ could engage in the activities she loves. She attends a day centre three times a week and has aromatherapy sessions every Friday. SJ has a passion for sensory activities, enjoying staff reading to her, listening to music, watching DVDs, and touching different textures. These activities bring her immense joy, and help stimulate her senses, allowing her to connect with the world around her in a meaningful way.
SJ’s health required constant vigilance. The staff at Anchor House were quick to identify any signs of distress and sought medical help quickly, when needed. They accompanied SJ to the hospital whenever necessary, maintaining regular communication with her mother throughout these episodes. After the first hospital admission, meetings with consultants were held to discuss potential surgical options, though invasive treatments were initially deemed too risky.
Over time, SJ formed strong bonds with the staff at Anchor House. After a few months, she became comfortable with the personal care routines that once caused her distress. The consistent, compassionate care she received helped her settle in and feel secure. These bonds were not just professional; they were built on genuine affection and a deep commitment to SJ’s happiness. The goal for SJ is clear - to support her health needs while helping her lead a fulfilling and meaningful life.
SJ’s story is one of profound transformation and hope, showing that with the right care and support, even the most challenging circumstances can be navigated successfully. Through the collaborative efforts of her family, social worker, health professionals, and the compassionate team at Anchor House, SJ has found a place where she can thrive.
Her journey continues, but she faces the future with a solid foundation of care and support. This is more than just a story - it is a celebration of the human spirit and the incredible impact of a loving, supportive community.
