SC's story
Read SC's story - a journey of recovery with us at Yew tree Lodge.
SC's journey to recovery is a testament to the compassionate care at Yew Tree Lodge. After experiencing severe mental health challenges and exploitation in his council flat, SC arrived at Yew Tree Lodge in a vulnerable state. Through personalised support, including therapy, daily activities, and a nurturing environment, SC has made remarkable progress, regaining his independence and rediscovering his passions.
SC, a university graduate, was referred to Yew Tree Lodge after experiencing severe challenges in his council flat in Wokingham. Following the death of his mother, SC found himself in a downward spiral, becoming vulnerable to substance misuse, financial exploitation, and 'cuckooing' by drug traffickers who used his flat for illicit activities. His mental health declined, leading to self-neglect, an inability to manage his tenancy, and significant debts.
The referral process was initiated by social services, with the home manager at Yew Tree Lodge conducting an on-site assessment. SC's flat was in disrepair, and he was neglecting his personal hygiene. His transition to Yew Tree Lodge was complicated by an incident where drug dealers held him against his will. Despite this, he expressed a strong desire to start a new life at Yew Tree Lodge.
Upon arrival, he appeared fearful and unsettled, showing clear signs of self-neglect. His immediate needs included support with personal hygiene, reassurance regarding his safety, and guidance on managing substance misuse. He was promptly referred to ’Change Live & Grow‘, a drug and alcohol service, and enrolled in activities such as Tai Chi, to promote wellbeing.
A personalised care plan, and a risk assessment, were developed, then regularly reviewed with SC. He received one-on-one support to ensure compliance with his antipsychotic medication and was encouraged to engage in daily activities. Since his admission, there has been no evidence of drug or alcohol use, with smoking restricted to designated areas. His hygiene and room maintenance have also improved, as he now cleans his room and mops his bathroom regularly, taking on cooking responsibilities during his assigned days.
Music has become a source of joy for him again, as he often plays his guitar for other residents and staff. Actively participating in household activities and Tai Chi classes, he also enjoys reading fiction during his leisure time.
Expressing a strong desire to return to independent living and secure full-time employment, SC has been allocated a work coach by Wokingham Social Services, to help him explore paid or voluntary work opportunities.
His transformation has been significant, with noticeable improvements in both his mental health and daily living skills. Feeling safe and supported at Yew Tree Lodge, he shared: "I am really happy that I have been rescued by Yew Tree Lodge from something very awful. I feel safe here, and the staff are very helpful. I'm looking forward to doing a lot more in the future."
SC’s journey at Yew Tree Lodge highlights the importance of compassionate, person-centred care in enabling individuals to overcome severe challenges and work towards a brighter future. The support he has received has been instrumental in his recovery, and he is now on a path towards achieving his goals of independence and meaningful employment.
