About this location

Priory Hospital East Midlands, located between Nottingham and Mansfield, is a 37-bedded specialist acute and psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) service for adult females.

Priory’s acute and PICU services aim to allow more people to be treated closer to home and we support the NHS to repatriate out-of-area patients back to local areas.

Services

Our acute services offer round-the-clock assistance in times of emergencies. Our specialist inpatient acute teams are committed to providing the highest quality of care, supporting patients with a wide range of mental health conditions in safe and highly therapeutic environments.

We are able to support people with:

  • Complex mental health needs

We are able to support informal patients or people detained under the Mental Health Act (MHA).

Treatment approaches

At Priory Hospital East Midlands, we offer individualised care packages for patients, and everyone who stays with us is allocated their own consultant psychiatrist and named nurse.

Our aim on Quartz and Opal Ward is to act as an extension to NHS care pathways during times of fluctuating capacity and flow. This allows more people to receive care and treatment, continuity of care and allow for minimum disruption to patients and their loved ones.

Our assessment and treatment options are overseen by a full and diverse multidisciplinary team (MDT). We specialise in positive behaviour support (PBS) planning, supporting our patients to positively manage and develop new strategies to improve their distress and trauma.

All of our bedrooms are single-occupancy and have an en-suite bathroom. Patients are encouraged to personalise their bedrooms while they are staying with us. We provide:

Pathways

Priory’s network of high quality facilities enables us to offer joined-up care pathways with our dedicated residential services. We offer programmes which integrate healthcare treatment and therapy, which are tailored according to individual needs, in an appropriate setting. Our strength is that we can provide a seamless transition for the individual as they progress between higher and lower dependency services.

Quartz and Opal Ward work collaboratively with family/carers and a host of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), to strive for minimum lengths of hospital stays. We aim to discharge everyone who stays with us into the community, when possible.

Our PICU services have been designed to support people in a severe phase of illness, who cannot be managed in acute services. Our dedicated PICU services place us at the forefront of specialised intensive care, and our highly trained teams can support people with complex needs and challenging behaviours, along with co-existing issues (such as substance misuse).

On Sapphire Ward, we’re able to admit people from a range of clinical settings, including other mental health inpatient wards and A&E departments. We are also able to support patients detained under the MHA.

At East Midlands, we offer an individualised, person-centred approach for all of our patients.

We specialise in supporting people in a severe phase of mental illness. Our staff have vast experience in helping people to manage high levels of distress, integrating current best practice to promote recovery. Our aim is for people to stay with us for a short as time as possible, with a major emphasis on helping patients to reduce the risk to themselves and others, and improve their coping skills in the short term.

Our assessment and treatment options are overseen by a full and diverse MDT. Therapy and care is centred on the recovery model and care plans form the basis for our patients’ subsequent care in the community.

We can support people staying with us to step down into a high dependency unit (HDU) or a rehabilitation and recovery (R&R) service, depending on their needs. We can also facilitate pathways into our Priory Adult Care services, where appropriate.

Information for family and friends

How do home visits work?

Home visits are encouraged and planned according to the risk of each person staying with us. We help to arrange home visits where it is safe to do so.

What is your visitation policy?

We are flexible with visiting times, and family and friends can visit their loved ones whenever they wish. However, we do ask that visitors call ahead prior to a visit, to confirm.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with my loved one’s care and wellbeing?

Yes, family and friends are actively encouraged to be part of their loved one’s recovery and are kept updated with progress. Family and friends are also invited to key meetings, such as care programme approach (CPA) and care and treatment review (CTR) meetings.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

People staying with us can use their own mobile phone, and each ward has its own phone that people can use.

What type of things are families expected to provide, and what is provided by the home?

We provide all furnishings and food on-site and encourage patients to bring their own belongings to individualise their own space.

What are the bedrooms like?

All of our bedrooms are furnished, and residents are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes. They are all single person, en-suite rooms.

Are external doors kept locked?

All of our external doors are locked. However, every person staying with us will be individually assessed for any risks to see what security is needed.

What do service users eat and how do meal times work?

We have set meal times for people staying with us and they are able to choose from a wide menu, which takes into account all dietary requirements and needs. Patients can also order light meals and snacks at other times.

How does laundry work?

People staying with us are encouraged to do their own laundry, but staff are on hand to provide support if needed.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We have a restricted and prohibited items list, which is reviewed and updated regularly. This can be seen on request.

Are pets allowed?

Patients are allowed to have their pets come to visit them. However, we ask that notice is given so we can make any necessary arrangements.

How do activities work?

We have a timetable of psychology and OT each day for people staying with us, as well as activities on the wards. We also offer a number of self-directed and person-centred activities, such as fine art, tailored to individual needs.

Do service users and families have an input into the service user’s care plans?

All of the people staying with us and their families/friends are invited to attend key meetings, with the person’s consent.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is free car parking on-site.

What is the smoking policy? Can service users buy cigarettes?

Priory Hospital East Midlands is a non-smoking site. However, in our acute service, vaping is allowed in the garden area or in people’s bedrooms.

How is treatment accessed and funded?

We don’t take referrals directly from individuals and families. Instead, the first step will be for you to reach out to the person’s GP so that they can be referred and funded through the correct NHS channel. Depending on the type of support needed, this could include local authority funding, NHS funding, joint funding between the local authority and NHS, or direct payments. Please note, referrals for NHS or local authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our customer service centre provides 24/7 support for NHS mental health enquiries and referrals. Our customer referral co-ordinators can support you from your first call right through to the enquiry conclusion, providing updates throughout the process. We offer 24/7 crisis referrals, fast access to bed availability and placements, and a single access point for end-to-end enquiry management.
