Information for family and friends

How do home visits work?

Patients home leave is discussed and planned in MDT in consultation with the patient and carers/family where appropriate, as part of the therapeutic timetable when is safe and part of the discharge journey.

What is your visitation policy?

We are flexible with visiting times, but we do ask that visits take place outside of mealtimes, as these are protected times for the people who are staying with us.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with my loved one’s care and wellbeing?

We have a carers’ lead on each ward and they will endeavour to ensure that families and carers are provided with up to date information and invited to the weekly ward rounds, as long as we have consent from the person staying with us.

We also hold bi-monthly carers support groups.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

People staying with us are able to bring in their own mobiles and the wards have cordless telephones that can be used.

What type of things are families expected to provide, and what is provided by the home?

Families are expected to provide basic toiletries, clothing and personal comfort items for the person we support, as long as these are deemed as being safe.

What are the bedrooms like?

All of our bedrooms are en-suite and comfortably furnished. People staying with us are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes.

Are external doors kept locked?

All of our external doors are locked. However, every person staying with us will be individually assessed for any risks to see what security is needed.

What do service users eat and how do meal times work?

We have team of chefs who provide quality hot and cold balanced meals. People are able to choose their meals from a daily menu, and we can cater for dietary and cultural choices.

On Bartle ward, we support patients with three structured meals and three structured snacks each day, which takes place in an allocated dining space where patients are prescribed attendance at a variety of tables based on support identified via their weekly ward round. Patients meet with the ward dietician weekly to develop individualised meal plans which encompass part of their recovery pathway. Meal plans are considerate of patient allergies and pre-established dietary preferences eg veganism.

How does laundry work?

We have a laundry on every ward for people to use.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We have a restricted and prohibited items list for each service, which is reviewed and updated regularly. This can be seen on request.

Are pets allowed?

Pets are not normally allowed. However, this can be discussed during the ward rounds and if having pets is considered to be therapeutic for the person staying with us, then we will make provisions for this.

How do activities work?

Our activity co-ordinators work with the people staying with us to provide a range of activities to enhance their ability to independently manage their time in situations where they may feel personally challenged. The occupational therapy assistants empower people to access activities which they may previously not have been familiar with. This has the outcome of empowering them and enhancing their self-confidence and self-esteem.

Do service users and families have an input into the service user’s care plans?

All service users devise their care plan with their named nurse and with patient consent these can then be shared with relatives and carers. Relatives are invited to MDT and CPA to be part of care plan formulations.

What are the car parking facilities?

We have on-site car parking facilities for visitors.

What is the smoking policy? Can service users buy cigarettes?

Priory Hospital Preston is a non-smoking site.

How is treatment accessed and funded?

We don’t take referrals directly from individuals and families. Instead, the first step will be for you to reach out to the person’s GP so that they can be referred and funded through the correct NHS channel. Depending on the type of support needed, this could include local authority funding, NHS funding, joint funding between the local authority and NHS. Please note, referrals for NHS or local authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our customer service centre provides 24/7 support for NHS mental health enquiries and referrals. Our customer referral co-ordinators can support you from your first call right through to the enquiry conclusion, providing updates throughout the process. We offer 24/7 crisis referrals, fast access to bed availability and placements, and a single access point for end-to-end enquiry management.
